Benidorm takes a step towards being declared a tourist municipality

The Spanish Senate on Wednesday gave the green light for a modification of local tax laws which will allow Benidorm to be considered as a tourist municipality.

The Partido Popular proposal was presented by Agust�n Almod�bar from Benidorm who had 127 votes in support thanks to the CiU and some senators from the Mixed Group.

There were 120 votes against the idea from the PSOE, PNV and others, while the Canary island group abstained.

To be considered as a tourist municipality a town has to have more than 20,000 population, and the number of second residence or tourist homes has to be greater than that of main residence.

There are currently 21 localities in Spain with the tourist distinction which allows for greater flexibility in shop opening hours and other areas.

Benidorm has been calculated to represent 4% of the total tourism of Spain.

Benidorm Low Cost Festival

The Benidorm live concert scene will be enhanced this summer with an Indie music festival. Called the Low Cost Festival it will take place in the L'Aiguera park on Friday and Saturday, 23rd and 24th July.

It's hoped that the concert will be attractive to British visitors with the bulk of the Indie outfits, including headliners Placebo, being British based.

Tickets will cost 30 euros per day of the festival or a two-day ticket can be purchased for 45 euros.

Longer Promenade for Levante Beach

The coastal authorities have started work on extending the promenade running by Benidorm's Levante beach along its final stretch. The end of the beach in Rincon de Loix is a rocky, eroded area that gives quite a scruffy appearance that is out of keeping with the rest of Levante.

The land will be levelled to make it flat, the wall alongside will be repaired and a hundred metre length of promenade with handrails, benches and waste bins will make for a pleasant stroll on balmy summer evenings.

Benidorm to limit traffic access

A new pedestrian area will be established by July 1.
Benidorm is to limit traffic access to the historic town centre to just residents and the emergency services.

The Town Hall has decided to return to a project to pedestrianise the area of the Castle and the Calvari district, installing a system of number plate recognition cameras and traffic lights which will stop access for non-authorised vehicles.

The idea was first muted two years ago but now moves ahead, with July 1 the date by which it is hoped to be fully operational. Local Police will fine any vehicle which gains unauthorised access to the restricted area by ignoring the traffic lights.

Certain times will be allocated for loading and unloading vehicles to gain access, while tourists will be able to apply for permission in their countries of origin or once in Benidorm.

Benidorm Concerts 2010

One of Latin America's hottest acts is on her way to Benidorm and another is being lined up by the town council.

Paulina Rubio, a chica from down Mexico way will play a concert in Benidorm Bull Ring on Friday 7th May. It starts at 23.00 and will cost from 20 euros upwards and she'll be promoting her new album 'Gran City Pop.'

Also on the cards, with negotiations at an advanced stage, is a performance by Colombian hottie, Shakira. She'll be shaking what she's got in August or September sometime at a venue as yet to be decided.

Terra Mitica Opens

Tomorrow marks the first day of Terra Mitica's 10th season in Benidorm. To celebrate it's big One -oh anniversary it will be open for an extra 51 days this year. As you probably know it's normally open at weekends and fiestas in the off season and open every day in the height of summer. Our calendar shows all the details of the park's opening days in 2010.

Visitors will also get to see new 'personalities' entertaining the crowds in the park with a 'tenth anniversary' theme and there'll be anniversary souvenirs on sale as well!

High Speed Trains for Benidorm?

The proposed scheme to bring Spain's super fast AVE train from Madrid to Benidorm is gathering momentum. Politicians and officials met earlier this week to thrash out plans to put the station for the super train next to the tram stop at Terra Mitica. Here, it's close enough to the town centre without having to clear a way through the urban environment for new tracks to be laid.

Now the scheme must be approved by two different Government departments in Valencia and Madrid ? and there is a 'good feeling' between the two ? before finance can be approved and it given the go ahead.

If and when the AVE makes its trip from the capital to Benidorm, it will take a mere 2 hours to cover the long journey, making it more attractive than flying for those who want to go from city centre to city centre. And if you're on holiday in Benidorm, you could take a nice day trip to Madrid!

Good news for visitors to La Cala at the western end of Benidorm's Poniente beach. Finestrat council, where La Cala is located, are at last able to demolish the Anfora building which has stood in ruins by the beach for years.

The building was started in the mid 60's and never finished. It actually stands on public coastal land and also blocks rights of way and has been an eyesore for all this time.

Now, after a long process of negotiation, the council have acquired the building and are going to demolish it. It all has to be done by hand for the first phase as the Anfora adjoins another building, after this the heavy machines will take over to finish the job.

Once it's gone the council would like to expand the beach making it more accessible for everyone.

Benidorm - Lying Low in Madrid

Madrid will see Benidorm in all its colourful glory this month at the Fitur International tourism fair being held there. The Benidorm stand at the fair will be constructed from 400 inflatable bright green, yellow, orange and blue lilos and will be 7 metres high!

To make it even more spectacular it'll be illuminated by fluorescent and halogen lights which will really show off the 19 stalls manned by representatives of the various sectors of the Benidorm tourist industry. It even has a cafe where visitors can relax during a busy day!

During the fair, which lasts from 20th to 24th of January, a group of actors in bathing costumes will defy the freezing temperatures in the main streets and squares of Madrid and give out 5000 lilos - they've all got Benidorm emblazoned across them - to further publicise our favourite holiday resort.

Benidorm Beaches - At Your Convenience

Relief is at hand as the mayor of Benidorm, Agust�n Navarro, has revealed that the town's two big beaches Levante and Poniente, will have around 40 public toilets for the new season.

The council will convert 6 premises on the promenades of both beaches - 3 on each - for use as public conveniences and nappy changing stations. The work will be done by apprentices from the council's workshops and they'll be ready by Easter when the season starts in earnest.

Magnum Photos exhibition in Benidorm

The Aula de Cultura CAM in Benidorm will be hosting "Un Mundo Compartido" until 31st January. This photographic exhibition shows the work of seven photographers attached to the renowned Magnum Photos agency. The images deal with such social topics as visual and auditory disability, autistic disorders, the education of the most underprivileged and the development of musical culture.

The exhibition is open to the public from 6pm to 9pm, Monday to Saturday and has arrived in Benidorm after visiting Barcelona, Madrid, Santander, Pamplona, Alicante and Elche. The photographers taking part include Martine Franck, Maya Goded, Alex Majoli, Susan Meiselas, Gueorgui Pinkhassov and Patrick Zachmann, who were invited by the Orange Foundation in 2007 to take photos of their different projects and activities to celebrate their twenty years of social commitment.

A Theatrical Christmas in Benidorm

Nadal de Teatre offers a complete programme of performances that, for the first time, will be taking place in different areas of Benidorm. The Barcelona company Teatre Nu, which specialises in the creation of shows, will be performing "L'avi Ram�n" on 26th December at the Town Assembly Hall of this town on the Costa Blanca.

On 27th December, Xarxa Teatre will be performing "Las nuevas aventuras de la bruixa Marruixa". These performances will be followed by the show "Franskestein el monstruito" by the group Teatro para Contar, on Monday 28th December at the CAM Cultural Centre. The puppet show "La ni�a que riega la albahaca", by the company T�teres de Mesa Teatrola, will be performed at this same Cultural Centre on 2nd January, and this year's programme will be completed with a musical band featuring 30 instruments, which will fill the districts of La Cala and El Rinc�n de Loix with sound.

Benidorm Fiesta Week

Every year the Benidorm Fiestas are celebrated in November beginning the Friday of the 2nd weekend until the following Wednesday, culminating in a HUGE firework display (In 2009 they begin on Friday 6th).

Officially it?s a celebration honoring the La Virgen del Sufrage and Jaime Apostol, the Patron Saints of Benidorm. The fiesta lasts for 6 days and there is something for everybody from football, live music and fishing competitions to cultural events and religious processions. One particular procession is memorable: a huge flower- filled parade with carriages and costumes through the streets of Benidorm.

The statue of the Virgin is dressed in a golden and blue period costume and carried in procession to the plaza in front of the church of San Jaime.

The streets are decorated with huge flower bouquets and special flower walls are built. There is music everywhere. Street musicians, big brass bands, rock music and classical concerts, midnight Music Concerts in the Large Auditorium in Aig�era Park.
Outdoor theatres in the streets with plays, variety acts, Childrens parties. Puppet shows. Clowns - Flowers - Fireworks - everywhere is fiesta... as only the Spanish can FIESTA.

The Comunitat Valenciana is sailing ahead

The waters of the Comunitat Valenciana coastline will be turned into a battlefield this week as the most exciting naval contests will be fought out. As five Level 0 races, the highest racing category, will be setting off from Alicante, Valencia and Castell�n.

From 30th April until 3rd May, the XII Grau de Castell�-Sant Antoni de Portmany Crossing will be taking place off the coastline of Castell�n de la Plana, whereas participants in the VII 222 Mile L�grimas de Santa Marta Trophy will be setting off from the port of La Vila Joiosa, in a competition that can earn the competitors points for the Official Racing Calendar of the Spanish Royal Sailing Federation for the High Seas Spanish Championship in the Mediterranean Zone and the Spanish Single-Handed and A2 Championship.

And there's even more, because in Valencia, just like every year, the exciting Laser Cup is also getting underway. And over the weekend, all eyes will be on the town of D�nia as it hosts the Spanish Catamaran Cup between 1st and 3rd May, and the Euro Cup 29er Regatta, which will be setting off from the D�nia Royal Sailing Club.

Benidorm Medieval Market

Happy birthday Benidorm! 684 years old next week and to celebrate, the Lords of the Manor are holding 'Ye Olde Medieval Market IX' and all the vassals, serfs, knights and wandering beggars of the village are invited.

Taking place on ye 1st to 3rd of ye merrye month of May, the market will be held in the Elche Park and Paseo de Colon where around 70 market stalls will occupy a specially themed area to give a real flavour of the middle ages.

The following week on 9th May, professional actors will re-enact the presentation of the town's charter in 1325 in front of the Nautical Club on the Paseo de Colon.

The council have big plans for the market and want to make it a much bigger event next year with around 200 stalls, music, and spectacles.

Ona Sol Hotels in the Goteborg Turism Fair

Last weekend in Goteborg (Sweden), was one of the most important tourism fairs held at European level in which Ona Sol Hotels decided to participate for the first time.
The first two days of the show, the 19th and 20th, were as is usual devoted to the industry professionals '20,000' in total seeking to expand their European knowledge and strengthen their business portfolios. The remainder of the fair was open to all, some 33, 000 visitors passed through the halls eager to find newer and interesting destinations.

In all 103 countries and provinces were represented and a massive 1,900 tourism related business eager to educate all visitors and create new interest in what's on offer in their individual countries, the flag ship of the Community of Valencia region as popular as ever, Benidorm proved to be one of the most visited stands in the fair. Onasol represents one of the major hotel groups in the Benidorm and surrounding areas and didn't miss the opportunity to promote it's comprehensive variety of hotels and packages to a market famous for its eagerness to travel. Due to the unique climatic zone in this part of Northern Europe, studies show that 70% of the population travels at least once a year for their holidays, that's a very significant number of people travelling throughout Europe.

23rd 200 mile double-handed race in Altea

Between 6th and 8th March, the waters around Altea, Ibiza and Formentera will be hosting the 23rd 200 mile double-handed race. This winter competition is open to boats over nine metres in length and will earn the competitors points in the Spanish Double-Handed Championship. Each participant will sail to achieve the best qualifying position. The race is set to start at 12 o'clock midday on 6th March, simultaneously for the two routes. Sign up and take part. Benidorm, host city for the 2009 Davis Cup

Spain's Royal Tennis Federation has selected the city of Benidorm as host for the first round of the 2009 Davis Cup World Group matches, which will see Spain face Serbia in March. The Spanish side for the Davis Cup will be kicking off the first round of championship matches against a Serbian team captained by Novak Djokovic. To be held from 6th to 8th March 2009, the games will be played at a 14,000-capacity venue within the Terra M�tica theme park. The animals of the nature park in Benidorm, TERRA NATURA, are all in perfect condition and have not suffered any injury after overcoming the gusts of strong winds that devasted the park's facility and nearby areas. The rapid action of the TERRA NATURA staff guaranteed the security of all the zoological collection of the enclosure without any specimen suffering. All the animals are safe and well, giving thanks also to the magnificent animal installations that are to be found within the complex, being built decisively for their protection.

The strong winds that reached up to 140 kph in some instances have caused material damage to garden areas, shades and wooden structures that are now being analysed and assessed by the responsible of the park, these being rapidly repaired. TERRA NATURA will be opening its doors to the public with total normality within a very short period of time.

The business manager of TERRA NATURA, Mr. Alberto Gaforio, points out that: ''the co-ordination of the park employers, the municipal staff, security and firemen were instrumental in stopping the spread of fire that bordered the complex and, without doubt, would have caused serious damage to our facilities.''

With this in mind, the Directive wish to publicly ''thank the teamwork and great effort of the Park's workers who with their organisation, holding of guard throughout the night, their collaboration with the FCC who supplied lorries with water, provided vigilance and the further avoidance of the fire affecting the facilities of the park.''

Terra M�tica is starting its Christmas celebrations during the bank holiday weekend at the start of December. From December 6th to 8th, the theme park in Benidorm will open its doors to give you the chance to try out all its rides. There will also be a traditional Christmas market where you will find toys, chocolates and nougat, and even a farm.

This Christmas, in addition to its usual shows and restaurants, Terra M�tica will be offering all kinds of new attractions including its giant tree, the real-life nativity scene, entertainment and shows, workshops and a wide variety of children's games.

Plus, until January 4th, Ocion�a will be opening its restaurants and shops, and for its bravest visitors, a large number of rides such as Infinnito, la Batalla de la Pir�mide and Atalaya, the new adventure park. You really won't want to miss out!
