But, besides that, Benidorm is a city that has always put its effort so that its visitors return home with a feeling of having spent their holidays in one of the best places possible.

The former fishing village gradually became a reference point when talking about tourism and now, Benidorm, cosmopolitan and cozy, is for many people, celebration, fun and night, for others, rest and relaxation, for others, sun and sand, but what everyone agrees is in the feeling of happiness you get when you remember the moments you lived in a land in which they feel at home and are treated with complete kindness for its people.

The entertainment of Benidorm has increased considerably in recent years, theme parks, golf courses, great concerts... but if you visit our city you never miss the opportunity to get closer to its culture, its cuisine, the beauty of the surrounding landscape and a lot of activities that you will love.

For more information about Benidorm see the following paragraphs which we extend some of the essence that awaits you if you visit us.

History

Playa de Levante - Benidorm
Sitting on remains Iberians, Phoenicians and Carthaginians, the present site of Benidorm comes from the era of Jaume I the Conqueror, who share the conquered fiefs among his assistants. Part of this region was held by the Admiral Bernat de Sarrià. On May 8, 1325, Bernat de Sarrià grants its "Town Charter" to Benidorm which allowed the noble lord to create the Castle and the town of Benidorm, marking the new boundaries of the village.

The difficulties for the growth of the population were many, the surrounding villages were populated by "infidels", the pirates roamed the area regularly and dry weather meant that water resources were scarce. In this situation, fishing became the livelihood of the people of the area. The pirate attacks made Benidorm a nearly abandoned town in the mid-fifteenth century, but gradually Benidorm goes up by improving coastal defenses and fishing until the mid-eighteenth century the present church of St. James was built and it starts a gradual population growth. Fishing and in particular the art of the trap (tuna fishing) contributed to the development of Benidorm, and the fishermen in Benidorm had a deserved reputation as masters of this art of fishing, being highly valued in throughout the Mediterranean.

Playa de Levante - Benidorm
The improvement in communications in the second half of the nineteen century allowed the beginnings of a new source of revenue, Tourism. But the civil war in the twentieth century made a lot of people to migrate, thus the town's population declined again. After the war, Benidorm is gradually recovering, thanks to fishing, but by middle of twenty century fishing is becoming scarce and Benidorm began to think of another source of income, changing agriculture and fisheries by services, which are the beginning of the city to achieve what it is today. Somehow, the success of Benidorm is due to the men and women that live here which, throughout its history, have known how to work out their modus vivendi from the natural geographical conditions, that have not always been benevolent or adequate, with an exemplary tenacity.

Weather

Benidorm
In a strategic location of the Costa blanca and surrounded by mountains (Aitana, Serra Gelada and Tossal La Cala), the particular location of Benidorm gives it a special microclimate. Facing south, Benidorm is "locked" between the three above-named mountains, which prevent the passage of the cold north winds, the Levante winds and storms largely reaching those areas. This means that the temperatures are pleasant throughout the year. Its low rate of rainfall makes Benidorm one of the points with greater assurance of good weather in Spain.

The average temperatures are 18.7ºC in winter, 23.7ºC in spring, 31.7ºC in summer and 19.2°C in autumn. This temperatures makes Benidorm enjoy mild winters, delightful springs, warm summers and privileged autumns.

The temperature of seawater in Benidorm is about 20ºC on average over the year. In winter is around 15.5ºC, in spring 21ºC, in summer 26ºC and in autumn 18.3°C. The relative humidity is situated at an average of 60/70%.

Beaches

Playa de Poniente - Benidorm
The other big attraction of Benidorm are its golden sandy beaches and clean and clear waters. Benidorm's beaches have been awarded many times with the blue flag for cleanliness and for the quality of sand and water.

the Levante Beach is about 2 km. in length and extends between Point Canfali, in the heart of Benidorm, and the Punta Pinet and we can ensure it is one of the busiest in the Mediterranean. The promenade and its decorative palm trees make the Levante beach ideal for sunbathing. It is adapted for disabled guests.

Playa de Poniente - Benidorm
The Poniente Beach streches about 3km. from the port to the Punta del Tossal de la Cala. One reason to visit it is the new Poniente Promenade and has all the necessary facilities for disabled guests too.

We also have a small and charming Mal Pas Beach lying between the Port and Punta Canfali. Quieter beach than Levante and Poniente, opposite the island of Benidorm which a Marine Reserve fund is ideal for diving.

Along these beaches can be found nets to practice beach volleyball, mini soccer goals, playgrounds for kids and even libraries to enjoy reading.

The safety of our beaches is supervised by lifeguards who are scattered along the beaches and the Red Cross stands who are always ready to help in any mishap.

The beaches of Benidorm are the scenery of many different events throughout the year, such as traditional acts such as the staging of the Finding of the Blessed Virgen del Suffrage, in the Benidorm Major Festivities, the maritime procession in honor of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the staging of Moors and Christians battles, fireworks and sporting events such as beach volleyball tournaments, beach football, Racing Sailing or Racing Jet. All of this makes the beaches of Benidorm a central place in everyday life.

In our city are held over 20 public Fiestas per year, Fiestas where the music blend with light and color as in the Carnival, with the fantastic play of flames in Falls y Hogueras, the cheerful atmosphere of the Andalusian and Asturian pilgrimages, the pageantry of the parades of floats, the Moors and Christians parades. Presiding over all this fiesta world we have the Festivities in honor of the Virgen del Sufragio and San Jaime, annual landmark in Bendorm. They begin the second weekend of November and lasts 5 days. The most important acts of the Patron Saints are: the enactment of the discovery of the Virgin, the offering of flowers, the parade of humor, the parade of floats and the huge firework display that takes place on Wednesday, last day of the Fiesta.

Around half of March we have the Fallas. There are three committees: Falla Centro, Falla Rincón and Falla Els Tolls, who are responsible for planting their Fallas in their respective districts. Parades and processions are the most significant events, the festival ends on the 19th with the "CREMÁ".
Moros y Cristianos - Benidorm
In June you can enjoy two main events, the Corpus Procession, where the Andalusian House celebrates the feast of Corpus Christi, with the joy and color of the Andalusian people (be sure to visit the fair with booths, next to the bullring) and the Hogueras (bonfires) of San Juan, parties at which the three committees (Hoguera de La Cala, Hogura Mercado and Hoguera del Campo), exhibit Fogueres, monuments for several days culminating his acts with "la nit del foc" or burning of bonfires on June 24, the feast of San Juan.

In early October, Benidorm is dressed in history, with the arrival of the festival of Moors and Christians. The entrance, the parades, the embassy or parliament and the landing are the most representative events of this festival so ingrained in the Spanish Levant.

There is a lot more, but we'll leave it here because we wanted to show you just a touch of the variety of celebrations that you can enjoy in our land.
